Tree..Done

The tree is up and the house is ready for Christmas. Here are a few of the highlights from the trip to Tom Sawyer's. These ducks were swimming around in the half frozen pond. The girl duck decided to put on a skating show. It was so cute.

Here are the kids in front of the tree beside the one we actually cut!! Ha, we were busy making our choice and I forgot to take the "family in front of the tree" pic.

 My and my sweetheart.

It was a fun afternoon. Now I am off to watch some rivalry football and fry some wings in a while.

Getting our Christmas Tree

We always wait til after Thanksgiving to get our tree. I love Thanksgiving and really want to make sure it gets it's proper recognition. We have gone to Tom Sawyer's Tree Farm for at least the last 11 years, maybe longer, my memory isn't perfect.

For Perspective

My Thankful List:
  • Salvation and a relationship with my Savior
  • My husband, and that we love each other more now than when we started almost 16 years ago
  • My two children, who are healthy, intelligent, kind and are growing in love for the Lord
  • My parents, who taught me well and continue to love me by encouraging me and supporting me
  • My siblings, the one who shared my childhood and the ones who came later and brought added joy
  • My extended family, who serve as a constant reminder that God uses all things to bring us closer to Him
  • My home, for its comfort and shelter from the outside world. May it always be a safe haven and loving place
  • Jobs, that provide all the necessities of life
I think these are all the things that matter, really. There are many other things I am thankful for from time to time, but they can sound silly and superficial. And I can get by without them. All the things on my list are essential to life for me and I will remember this holiday season to keep them at their rightful place in my priorities. Thank you, God, for way more than I deserve.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

It's a short school week, and we are getting ready for Thanksgiving. Aside from vacation, this is my favorite week of the year. I enjoy cooking and eating our traditional Thanksgiving meal. I love spending the entire day in the kitchen with my mom and with the kids running around playing. I love the smell of cooking the dressing, my favorite! We are planning a Friday trip to get our Christmas trees at Tom Sawyer's. We have done this for at least 11 years, if I count correctly. Each year, things change in our life but we still hold true to honoring our family traditions. It's so important to me that we always do this. It puts our hearts focused on the things that really matter.

Cuzzins

My grandparents ran a small mom and pop country store called Cuzzins. We spent summers with them when we were young and the bus would drop us off there after school. We always ate a snack and watched TV at the fireworks counter. Nutty bars and a small coke were my favorite, healthy, I know! We used to drive each other on the handtruck up and down the aisles of the store. We played in the cooler in the summer and as we got older we would help do things around the store. My grandma taught me how to run the register and make change probably before I was 10 years old. My brother and me would use empty boxes to make cars out of, we would draw all the necessary parts for driving on the inside and hold them under our arms and run!!  My fondest memories of childhood are here. It wasn't all fun and games, we worked there too, stocking drinks cases and the shelves, dusting the shelves, sweeping and sweeping and sweeping. Unfinished pine floors are always dirty... especially when everyone in the small town comes in daily, sometimes many times a day. It was the hub of Mountain Rest. Usually your day started and ended there. Everyone knew everyone else's business, but in the good way, when neighbors help neighbors, and the store owner lets the customer run a bill until the end of the month when they can finally pay it up. There was no shame in running the bill and no worry about getting paid, a man was true to his word and paid on time. My grandpa's wallet was so big he could hardly sit on it, and he paid us, too much really, for our work there in the summers. What I got there was so much more than money, it was a solid foundation. An appreciation for hard work, honesty, and love. I loved being there, I loved being in the family that owned it. As they aged and were no longer able to keep up with the demands of the store, my grandparents closed shop but still lived in the back part of the store, where they always had lived. The first place we took Blake after leaving the hospital was to Cuzzins to see my grandparents. The shelves were empty, the store dark with fewer lights on. It was sad and happy all at the same time. Sad at what the store had stopped being in our small town, happy for my grandparents to see the next generation of our family coming along. I wish my kids could have experienced all I did at Cuzzins, but unfortunately, things don't last forever.... only the memories do.

Looking Back

Sometimes it's nice to look back. As this colder and darker time of year comes each year, I look back to vacation pictures and remember breathing the salt air and feeling toes in the sand.

Cheer Banquet

Madalynn had her cheer banquet over the weekend. She got a sports bag and Razorback shirt and a trophy.
This was her first year cheering and she did a great job, despite the hot Saturdays and evenings we had games.
Not sure if cheering is in her future, we'll have to wait till next season and find out.

I picked up the CD from our photographer yesterday and am so pleased with our pictures.

pretty fall colors, nice looking family too

Cutting up

I love that we shot these pictures at our house, in our own surroundings. They are unique to us. I also love that we used my grandmother's quilt in them. It is one of my most treasured possessions.

Souvenirs from Israel

Mom got back from Israel this past weekend. She brought us all some really cool souvenirs.
This was mine and Bryan's...

This nativity scene is hand carved from the wood of an olive tree. It's very intricate and beautiful. I love it. I am glad to have meaningful pieces of art in my home. I love for every piece to tell a story of this family. The carved monkeys in the left of the pic are from a mission trip my dad took to Africa when I was a kid. They are my evil monkeys. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. The dried roses are from Bryan's mom's funeral.  All are daily reminders of who loves you and what is important in life.

Just some Stuff

  • We had family pics taken this week. It was long overdue. I know they will turn out great, our photographer is a long time friend and she does great work.
  • Bryan has declared himself a workaholic. He took several days off this week for some down time but ended up "being lazy"(his words) and feeling pretty bad. I told him he's not a workaholic, he's just a lucky person who actually enjoys his work and is fulfilled by it.
  • Mom should be mid-air on her return flight from Israel. I can't wait to see all the pictures and hear the stories. It's been a fast week and a half, on our end of course. I am looking forward to Wednesday night dinner and seeing everyone together again.
  • I have not packed a thing for our weekend in Davidson.
  • Maddie is super excited to spend the weekend with Cooper and Colsen. And swim in the pool at the hotel.
  • I enjoy the time change a lot. It means the kids can go to bed earlier. That results in happier kids and it gives me and Bryan time to spend together. Win,win!!
  • Some of the mornings this week have been a doozy. Maybe next week will be better.

Weekend Plans

This weekend we will travel to Davidson, NC to attend a Donor Sabbath Service at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Earlier this year my mother in law passed away suddenly and quite unexpectedly. During this difficult time, her sons chose to donate her life giving organs. We had never discussed this topic as a family or with her, but were sure she would want to help someone else if she had an opportunity to. What was a very sad day for us was also the happiest for her liver recipient, Gary. We recently met Gary and his family and have enjoyed getting to know them better and sharing stories about Peggy with them. Gary and his family are devoted to raising awareness for organ donation, as one might imagine. He has a second chance at life because of it. We can watch Peggy's legacy of love and giving continue on and we can honor and remember her at the same time.

Warnings

While on the way to work yesterday, I was singing along to Hello My Name Is, by Matthew West, not really paying much attention to the world around me. That's when I saw the police officer on the side of the street and hit my brakes. He saw me speeding and I knew it. I pulled over on Main Street, of all places, and waited, embarrassed, while he wrote me a warning. Thank goodness it was only a warning. I began to think how lucky that was. In life we get warnings, sometimes we heed them and sometimes we don't. A warning can come from something convicting someone says to you, your own conscience, or like me, from an officer of the law. Thankfully God gives us chances to right our course before worse consequences come our way.

No Girls Allowed!

This weekend the Long men held their 1st Annual Camping trip. They did allow Maddie and me to come to camp for Low Country Boil on Friday evening. There was fishing, hunting, good eating and good fun. The men folk have decided it will be an annual, maybe semi-annual event. There's nothing like being in nature with family.

Tough Questions

There are tough questions in life. One of these is Why? You can ask Why? in a lot of situations and never really be able to find an answer. This is so true when you see the world through the lens of law enforcement. Officers see the very worst in people a lot of the time. It becomes draining to wonder why the world is the way it is, why people do the things they do, why am I in this profession anyway? As the wife of an officer, my heart aches for my husband who experiences horrible things that shake him to his core. When he responds to home where a young girl has taken her own life, when he kneels with an accident victim as she breathes her last breath, when he recovers a young drowning victim, or simply enters a home where children are neglected and unloved, my heart hurts because his does. He doesn't tell me all his stories and I understand why. I couldn't understand. But I am certain God created some special people with the capacity to bear the burdens of others, no matter how crushing that burden may feel.  He gave them extreme amounts of compassion, even if it feels like they have no compassion left. He gave them strength, kindness, determination, and the ability to remain calm in an emergency. He gave them brothers and sisters made from the same mold and he gave them a badge to wear. I am also certain he collects all the tears they shed and all the worries on their minds. He takes all the wounded and bleeding pieces of their hearts when they bring them to Him and He mends them. He refines the officer daily, and often the fire is very hot. My husband says at the end of his career he will no longer be the same person he was when he started. I think he feels that his career is taking parts of him and hardening them and that it's a bad thing. I think that God is using him exactly the way He wants to bring glory to Himself. When we realize our brokenness and take it to God, we see that we must rely on Him fully to endure this world. It's when we don't take it to Him that we risk remaining hard and broken. God can display his power in a life that remains devoted to Him and His purposes. I am proud to be a law enforcement family and I am thankful that God doesn't leave us alone in it. He's making us better daily and at the end of this career I am sure we will see a better version of ourselves.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God." Matthew 5:9
